Introduction
The belief that “Green
Medicine is safe with no adverse side effects” has
been increasing the demand of medicinal plants both within
the country and at the international level since last two
decades…….
Nearly, eighty percent of the population of developing countries
relies on traditional medicine, mostly plant drugs, for their
primary health care needs. Unfortunately, these days they
are being deprived of utilizing their own rich resources.
This is due to renewed interest in traditional plant-based
medicines of the developed world during last two decades.
They have opened enormous opportunities for mega-diversity
developing countries like India .The developing countries
are trading MAPs on the verge of extinction. According to
estimates, the monetary value of the medicinal plants is
more than $60 billion (US dollar) in international market
and is growing at the rate of 10% annually both in international
and domestic market.
India is well known for its rich biodiversity and is one
of the richest plant medical cultures in the world. The complementary
or alternative medicines (CAMs) and traditional medicines
are the main health services in the country. According to
estimation, the commercial market for TMs has a turnover
of more than 4500 crore of rupees as it offers the medicine
in Ayurvedic, Siddha, Unani and Tibetan system. The different
CAMs and TMs product exported from India is to the tune of
500 million US dollar which is less than 1% of the global
market.
Objectives
The resurgence of interest
in the plant-based drugs have necessitated on increased demand
of medicinal plants that will lead to over-exploitation,
unsustainable harvesting and finally to a virtual decimation
of several valuable plant species in the wild, especially
medicinal plants.
To highlight and enhance the
different scope of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAPs) it
is, therefore essential to look into the different aspects
of their cultivation, collection, conservation, preservation,
and maintaining efficacy. With these objectives Indian Environmental
Society, a research based organization, is organizing National
Seminar on “Biodiversity
and Conservation of Medicinal and Aromatic Plant” during
February 4 - 5, 2006 at Hotel India International, Udaipur
- Rajasthan.
Topics of Discussion
- Traditional knowledge about MAPs, its
documentation, sharing information, education, preparation
of literature etc.
- Methods of conservation of MAPs (both
in situ and ex situ) and efforts on tissue culture technique.
- Preservation and methods to increase
the life of medicinally important parts of plants.
- Cultivation,
intercropping of MAPs by farmers, tribal people, provide
technical knowledge, evolving techniques for propagation,
cultivation of economically important medicinal plants.
- Marketing facilities for rural
and tribal people.
- Standardization of MAPs, Adulteration.
- Scientific research
and networking.
- Modifications in packaging, processing
for export, adding monetary value.
The organizers have arranged
accommodation in the University Guest House situated in the
Campus of Himachal Pradesh University.
Expected Outcomes
The following outcomes are expected:
- Development and implementation of strategies like cultivation,
preservation, conservation, research and networking of
MAPs
- The participants will be provided with the exposure
and technical knowledge on various issues of MAPs
- Dissemination
of information on MAPs to various organizations, policy
makers, rural and tribal men and women.
